About 450 people across Mildura have had potentially life-saving cardiovascular disease checks performed for free in what The Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, has called a “magnificent community effort”.
Ms Benham said the 40-day program, delivered by the Shane Warne Legacy via the spin king’s daughter Brooke, the local cardiovascular disease screening program and local heart health advocate Katrina Umback, has provided an easily accessible way for people across Sunraysia to get a quick snapshot of their heart health – including her own husband, for whom a check with his GP revealed some news.
“After all of the awareness initiatives of Katrina Umback and Heart to Heart, I made an appointment at the GP for a general check-up given heart disease runs in the family and I’m glad I did,” Ms Benham said.
“He will now have further testing and must see his GP through the Royal Flying Doctor Service regularly to keep an eye on things.
“With GP wait times in the state of crisis they’re currently in locally, having this initiative at hand at so many different locations has been brilliant – it means Mildura people have not had to wait weeks for a doctor’s appointment to have their heart health checked.
“I urge everyone to take advantage of this great initiative, because you never know what could be revealed and if you can’t get to a check, make an appointment with your GP or at a later date. It could save your life.”
The heart health screenings will be available at Mildura Central from 9am to 4pm until Thursday 30 May, before moving on to Swan Hill.
