The Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, has slammed the Premier, Jacinta Allan, over the failings of Victoria’s bail system, in Question Time this week.
Late last year, a 21-year-old allegedly stabbed two retail workers with a syringe during a 10-day crime spree in Mildura. She was charged and released on bail. After breaching bail, she appeared in court again, where the magistrate said she displayed a “comprehensive failure to comply with bail conditions”. Despite this, she was bailed again, only to allegedly commit another violent crime.
Ms Benham said the case exposes a system that repeatedly fails victims. “Victims of violent crime deserve to feel safe. When offenders repeatedly breach bail and continue to commit crimes, there must be consequences.”
Ms Benham asked the Premier how victims are meant to feel safe when violent offenders are repeatedly released. The Premier focused on broad bail reforms and prevention programs but failed to address the specific case or the ongoing risks to the community.
Ms Benham criticised the Premier for failing to provide a clear answer. “We’ve heard all the talk about ‘second-strike rules’ and crime prevention initiatives, but the question is simple: why are repeat offenders still being let back onto our streets?”
Ms Benham also challenged the Premier’s claim that recent bail reforms are enough. “Tougher laws mean nothing if they’re not able to be enforced. Violent offenders keep cycling through the courts without facing real punishment. The community needs to see action, not just threats.”
Ms Benham called on the government to urgently review the bail system and ensure repeat offenders face real consequences.
“Enough is enough. Victims deserve safety. Offenders must be held accountable. Our communities can’t wait any longer.”
