The Nationals Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, has issued a warning to the community about a concerning trend where businesses and food producers are receiving questionable invoices from the State Revenue Office (SRO).
While not a scam, these invoices are seen as a cash grab by the Labor Government, highlighting their mismanagement of the State’s finances.
The State’s dire financial situation has prompted the SRO to embark on a revenue-raising mission, indiscriminately sending invoices to businesses they may perceive as financially stable. This tactic, coupled with the challenges of inflation, rising living costs, and various overheads, puts our local food producers, who are already operating at the brink, in a precarious position.
“These added financial burdens, when combined with recent voluntary water cutbacks, could lead to a breaking point for many food producers, potentially forcing them to abandon their agricultural pursuits altogether,” said Ms Benham
“We are witnessing a situation where our hardworking food producers are being pushed to the edge. The State’s mismanagement is now directly impacting the livelihoods of those who form the backbone of our community,” said Ms Benham.
To address this issue, affected businesses and food producers should take a proactive approach. Before making any payments, it is crucial to consult with business advisors, accountants, or directly contact the SRO to clarify the nature and legitimacy of the invoices received.
“I have been in contact with several growers and business advisors who are genuinely stressed about this issue. It is imperative that we stand together and navigate these challenges collectively.
A consistent theme has been Labor’s Land Tax. Businesses and some residences have received their Land Tax bill when in fact, the property in question is exempt from this new Labor tax.
“Remember that farmland is exempt from land tax, so if you receive a happy new year invoice from the State Revenue Office, make sure to check with your accountant, don’t just pay without question.”
