Dear Sir,
As we approach National Diabetes Week it’s an important time to recognise the growing impact of diabetes in our communities and what can be done to improve health outcomes.
Diabetes is now one of the leading drivers of serious health issues across Northern Victoria, behind only cardiovascular disease and cancer. As stepmother to an 18 year old living with type 1 diabetes, I fully understand the challenges it brings and the ongoing need for community awareness and support.
People living with diabetes are significantly more likely to suffer heart attacks or strokes, and the condition is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure and amputation.
This year’s National Diabetes Week theme “Check today for a healthier tomorrow” is a reminder to all of us to prioritise health checks. Whether it’s checking your risk, booking a GP appointment, or reviewing your annual cycle of care, every step matters.
Early detection and effective management of diabetes can prevent life-altering complications. That’s why organisations like Diabetes Victoria are urging people to take action, not just during Diabetes Week, but all year round.
Raising awareness is key to making a difference. By talking about diabetes, encouraging regular checks, and supporting those affected, we can all play a part in reducing the toll of this growing health issue.
National Diabetes Week runs from July 13 to 19.
Warm regards,
