The Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, has placed education firmly on the agenda following two weeks of visits with local education providers.
Ms Benham said the opportunity to speak directly with those delivering education, from early years through to tertiary and vocational training, provided valuable insight into the strengths and challenges facing the sector in the Mildura region.
“From classroom educators to university faculty, support staff and students, the message is consistent. Regional communities are doing incredible work with limited resources, but more support is needed,” Ms Benham said.
Ms Benham’s visits included presenting to students at Mildura Senior College, meeting with staff from Monash University of Rural Health, attending a presentation by the Regional Education Commissioner, touring The Lake School with Department of Education representatives, and celebrating 40 years of TAFE Kids.
“These discussions highlighted not only the innovation and dedication across our local education sector, but also the need for more equitable investment in regional education,” she said.
Ms Benham said education in regional communities must be supported with consistent, long-term funding to ensure schools, training centres and universities can meet local needs and plan for the future.
“Every Victorian, regardless of where they live, deserves access to high quality education and training opportunities. That applies equally to school students, university graduates, apprentices, and those pursuing further study or reskilling later in life.”
Ms Benham commended local education providers for delivering strong outcomes despite facing workforce shortages, outdated infrastructure and funding gaps.
“Our local providers are achieving excellent results in challenging conditions. With the right support and investment, there is enormous potential to build on that success.”
