The state and federal Nationals have joined forces in a bid to save Robinvale’s ANZ bank from closure.
Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, presented Dr Anne Webster, the Federal Member for Mallee, with a petition organised by Robinvale locals in a last-ditch bid to save their bank.
With the closure now only days away, Ms Benham says she is hoping the appeal from the combined local voices sends a clear and powerful message to the ANZ board of directors.
“Having a local bank is fundamental to the fabric of every small regional community – including Robinvale,” Ms Benham says
“A phone and an app is not the solution for everyone, our senior citizens are not necessarily digitally savvy, and many – quite rightly – don’t overly trust it either, so if there’s no bank, what do they do?” she says.
“There are also the transient workers, who come here in their hundreds, and who support our food producers, year in and year out. They need cash access to banks.
“I also thank Dr Webster for accepting the petition and for her support in this urgent appeal.”
Ms Benham says she hopes common sense prevails in the outcome of the Senate enquiry into regional bank closures and our communities continue to benefit from these services for many years to come.
