The Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham MP, is urging residents, farmers and poultry owners to remain vigilant following the detection of H5 bird flu in wild birds across Victoria and far west New South Wales.
Ms Benham said there had been no detections in poultry or livestock in Australia and the risk to human health remained low, but good biosecurity and early reporting were important.
“Mildura is a major agricultural region, so it is important that our farmers, poultry producers and backyard bird owners remain alert.
“If you find a sick or dead bird, do not touch it. Record the location and, if safe to do so, take a photo or video and report it to Agriculture Victoria.
“Poultry owners should also take steps to prevent contact between their birds and wild birds and maintain good biosecurity practices.”
Suspected sick or dead wildlife can be reported to Agriculture Victoria, while suspected illness in poultry or livestock should be reported to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
