The Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, recently attended the official launch of the Australian Balloon Grand Prix and Balloons Over Mildura and Art of Flight Festival, where it was announced that Mildura will host Heat One of the 2026 FAI Australian Grand Prix.
Ms Benham attended the official launch in Melbourne alongside the Minister for Tourism, Steve Dimopoulos, and members of the Mildura International Balloon Fiesta committee.
“Mildura has a proud history in ballooning, and securing the opening heat of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix is an outstanding outcome for our region. It strengthens the region’s position as a leading destination for hot air ballooning events” Ms Benham said.
“This event will attract elite pilots from across Australia and deliver strong economic and tourism benefits.”
Running from 4–12 July 2026, the Balloons Over Mildura program will feature the first heat of the FAI Australian Grand Prix and is expected to draw national attention.
“This launch again put the Mildura region in the spotlight, bringing together government, industry, business and media partners, all working to promote Mildura as a major event destination,” Ms Benham said.
Ms Benham said the 2026 program presents a significant opportunity to elevate Mildura’s profile and strengthen regional tourism.
In a further boost to the event, Ms Benham also revealed that Minister Dimopoulos has committed to attending next year’s Mildura Grand Prix and even taking to the skies.
“I’m pleased to say that, when questioned, the Minister has agreed to come up in a balloon when he visits Mildura for the event.”
