Crime stats highlight Labor’s failure to keep communities safe
Recently released Crime Statistics Agency data comes as no surprise to Victorians – crime rates are on the rise. Across the state, crime has surged by 16 per cent in the past year and 19 per cent since Jacinta Allan became Premier.
Theft from motor vehicles is the most common and fastest-growing crime in Victoria, reaching its highest rate in two decades. In Mildura, theft from vehicles has skyrocketed by 27 per cent compared to last year, while aggravated burglary is up 17 per cent.
Equally alarming is the rise in youth offending. Since Jacinta Allan took office, crimes in Victoria committed by offenders aged 17 and under have increased by 16 per cent.
The Nationals Member for Mildura, Jade Benham said Labor has lost control of crime, leaving families, businesses, and communities vulnerable.
“I am out in the community. I speak to locals. I speak to Police Officers, and they say the same thing – they are frustrated. The justice system is letting them down, and our communities feel less safe. We deserve to feel safe in own community.
“Victoria is in the grip of a crime crisis. After denying for years that a problem exists, the government has finally acknowledged the need to act but the new bail laws are a knee-jerk reaction. We need to get tougher on crime.
“These statistics are yet another indictment of Labor’s decade-long failure on law and order. I have spoken extensively in parliament about our worsening crime rate and I will continue to fight for tougher bail laws and better police resourcing to make our communities safe again.
“The government’s failure to act earlier has left communities exposed, and now they’re scrambling to fix the mess they created. Soft-on-crime policies have allowed repeat offenders to walk free, devastating victims and undermining confidence in the justice system. Victorians deserve real solutions, not last-minute political damage control.
“Labor can’t manage crime and regional Victorians are paying the price.”
