The Nationals Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, has slammed the Allan Labor Government for slashing support for households through the Power Saving Bonus scheme, as energy bills continuing to climb.
The latest round of the program will offer just a $100 rebate, down from $250, and will now be limited only to concession card holders.
“This sends a shiver down the spine of working families, retirees without concession cards, and low-income earners who are already struggling to make ends meet,” Ms Benham said.
“Labor promised cheaper power, but the reality is stark; bills keep climbing and families are paying the price. Cutting this program only adds more pressure.”
Ms Benham said Labor’s record on energy affordability was one of broken promises and rising costs.
“They keep talking about delivering cheaper energy through renewables, but all we’ve seen are higher bills and fewer support measures,” she said.
“Labor can’t manage money, can’t manage your power prices and it’s regional Victorians who are paying the price.”
Ms Benham also raised concerns about the digital-only application process, which disadvantages those without internet access.
The Power Saving Bonus will be available to electricity account holders with a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card, Veterans’ Affairs Concession Card or a DVA Gold Card. Applications open 25 August 2025 at www.compare.energy.vic.gov.au.
