Nationals Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, is thrilled that a shameful attempt by the Allan Labor Government to remove the Public Records Advisory Council (PRAC) has been squashed by the Liberals and Nationals.
The Liberals and Nationals successfully moved and passed amendments to the Estate Agents, Residential Tenancies and Other Acts Amendment (Funding) Bill 2024 in Parliament, effectively ensuring transparency will prevail.
Ms Benham, who is also a member of the Integrity and Oversight Committee said she is relieved to see the PRAC remain in place.
“The Allan Labor Government’s attempt to remove more oversight bodies without providing any detail on a replacement shows a continued level of disdain towards Government integrity and oversight bodies,” Ms Benham said.
“It is clear that Labor knew what they were trying to do was wrong and accepted that our amendments were sensible and reasonable, so this is a big win for transparency.
“Victorians deserve to know the details when it comes to abolishing bodies like this, not the wishy washy ‘we will tell you later’ that we get.
“The PRAC plays an important role in ensuring the proper keeping of Government documents for IBAC, VAGO, and Parliament, and we must keep it that way.
“I am pleased Labor accepted the Liberals and Nationals amendments, and our public records will now continue to be handled in a careful and respectable way.
“Only the Liberals and Nationals will deliver integrity in Government.”
