2026 Kokoda Scholarships now open
The Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, is encouraging local students in Years 10-12 to apply for the 2026 Farnsworth Lochhead Lowe Kokoda Scholarship, with applications now open.
The scholarship gives participants the chance to follow in the footsteps of soldiers on the historic Kokoda Trail. They will trek through rugged jungle terrain, experience the challenges faced by those who fought in the campaign, and visit Bomana War Cemetery to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“To walk the Kokoda Trail really is a life-changing experience,” Ms Benham said. “Students will see where soldiers fought, reflect on the hardships they faced, and gain a deeper understanding of our history. At the same time, they will build resilience and leadership skills that stay with them for life.”
The inaugural trek in 2025 was a great success, inspiring students with a lasting connection to Australia’s military history. Two local students completed the journey, returning with improved life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, and leadership while learning first-hand about the Kokoda campaign.
Applicants must be physically fit, resilient, and commit to a 10-week training program. Applications include a 400-word essay on what the Kokoda story means to Australia, a questionnaire, and parental permission. Shortlisted students will be interviewed by former or current Defence Force personnel, who will make the final selection.
Students can contact their schools or Ms Benham’s office for more information. Local businesses interested in supporting the scholarship are also encouraged to get in touch with her office.
Applications close on Friday, 13 March 2026.
