The Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, has criticised the Allan Government for hiding behind Freedom of Information laws and preventing the return of the Mallee Rally to Sea Lake.
The event was denied a permit in 2019 pending a Conservation Management Plan, yet the final report has never been released. Attempts to obtain the document through Freedom of Information (FOI) have been refused by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), leaving the community without clarity or a pathway forward.
“We have been working hard to bring back the Mallee Rally, engaging with the Sea Lake Off Road Club and relevant authorities, but it has become increasingly clear there is no interest from the Government to work constructively with the community,” Ms Benham said.
“Small towns like Sea Lake rely on events like the Mallee Rally for their economic and social survival. Instead of partnering with the community to find a solution, the government appears focused on process and secrecy.”
Ms Benham said she has repeatedly asked the Minister for Environment how organisers can work constructively with the government to restore the event.
“If we understand the requirements, we can work with all relevant parties to achieve an outcome that supports the community while respecting the area’s Aboriginal heritage.”
Despite ongoing setbacks, Ms Benham said she will continue advocating for a solution and working to secure the return of the Rally so local businesses and volunteers can once again benefit from this iconic event.
“Regional communities deserve a government prepared to sit down at the table and work in good faith to support local events and local economies.”
