Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, recently embarked on a moving journey to Villers-Bretonneux to pay respects on Anzac Day and celebrate the 40th anniversary of the twinning with Robinvale.
Joined by distinguished representatives including Swan Hill Rural City Council Mayor, Stuart King and Villers Bretonneux Association representative Ryan McClure, Ms Benham was deeply moved by the warmth and appreciation extended by the local community.
The Mayor of Villers-Bretonneux graciously accepted an invitation to reciprocate the gesture, planning a visit to Robinvale in October for the town’s centennial celebrations.
“I’ve had no words to express how we’ve been received.
“Everyone was so appreciative, and it’s easy for us to forget about the impact of war being so far removed from it in the lucky country, but we are the lucky country because of the sacrifices made by those who serve,” said Ms Benham.
The visit not only held personal significance but also created valuable connections forged during the trip at all levels of governance.
“After accepting an invitation from Her Excellency Ms Gillian Bird, Australian Ambassador to France, my attendance to represent not only my constituents but our country was something I will be forever thankful for.”
Ms Benham emphasised the profound impact of the visit, not only in strengthening international ties but also in fostering a deeper understanding of the shared history between Australia and France.
The trip also witnessed collaboration with AFL Europe and players, further enhancing cultural exchanges and mutual appreciation.
Ms Benham expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful commemoration.
“I would like to thank President of the Villers Bretonneux Association, Ian Boyd for allowing me to represent the Robinvale community.
“I look forward to furthering the bond between Robinvale and Villers-Bretonneux in the years to come.”
