The Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, has worked on this project since the first day on the job, so the announcement that funding has been secured to install traffic lights at the Deakin Avenue and Sixteenth Street, Mildura intersection is a relief.
The announcement comes following a series of recent incidents at the site, which has a history of serious accidents, including two fatalities since 2009. The intersection has been subject to an increase in traffic due to the growth of Mildura South and the construction of the busy Mildura Sporting Precinct, making the upgrade long overdue.
“This is fantastic news for our community,” Ms Benham said. “This intersection has been a longstanding safety concern, and I have campaigned extensively for the installation of traffic lights. The safety of local residents, school children, and road users must always be a top priority.”
Ms Benham has been a strong advocate for the project, pushing for urgent action to address the risks at the intersection. She acknowledged the Federal Minister for Regional Development and the State Minister for Roads and Road Safety for committing to the upgrade.
“This funding is a crucial step towards making our roads safer,” Ms Benham said. “Our community has raised concerns for years, and I’m pleased to see that those voices have been heard. The installation of traffic lights will not only improve safety but also help reduce congestion and vehicle speeds near Mildura South Primary School.”
Ms Benham thanked Darryl Morgan and his team at Mildura Rural City Council, Mildura South Primary School Principal, Simon Trembath, and the local community for their advocacy and reaffirmed her commitment to holding the government accountable to deliver the project without delay, ensuring that future road safety initiatives continue to be a priority in our region.
