Hardworking Victorian families in the Mildura electorate will pay the price of the Andrews Government’s incompetence as several new and increased taxes and charges come in effect from 1 July to start the new financial year, said Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham.
Ms Benham said increases will add hundreds of dollars a year to the cost of everyday necessities such as public transport, energy, motoring costs and employment opportunities, including;
- A 25 per cent increase in the Victorian Electricity Default Offer.
- A 7.7 per cent increase in electric vehicle road user charge.
- A 42 per cent increase in employer WorkCover Premiums.
In addition, the Andrews Government’s new rent tax and COVID levies on property and jobs take effect from 1 July – making it more expensive to hire a Victorian worker and adding further cost pressure on rapidly increasing rents.
These new and increases taxes and charges come as and recent Parliamentary Budget Office analysis confirms Victoria is the highest taxed state in the nation.
Ms Benham said Mildura households were already the highest taxed in Australia as Victorian Government debt reaches record levels compared to other states, and these new increases would make it more difficult for household budgets.
“From July 1, Victorians will be paying more for heating their homes, cooking dinner and driving to and from work, appointments or visiting family,” Ms Benham said.
“These additional taxes and charges will add further pressure to household budgets at a time Victorians can least afford it.”
Shadow Minister for Finance, Jess Wilson, said Victorians struggling to make ends meet were being punished for the incompetence of the Andrews Government.
“With Victorians paying $10 million in interest a day on Daniel Andrews’ record debt, it is little wonder why taxes on jobs, schools, rents continue to rise.”
