The Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, has slammed the Allan Labor Government for wasting $13 million on 45 “machete bins” across Victoria in a misguided attempt to reduce violent crime.
“Forty-five bins will be rolled out across Victoria at nearly $290,000 each, alongside a public awareness campaign that runs for just three months,” Ms Benham said.
“Crime is escalating, Victorians are worried, and yet Labor has chosen to spend millions on a scheme that won’t stop criminals.
Ms Benham said Labor’s priorities are completely out of touch.
“Victoria Police are critically underfunded. More than 1,100 frontline positions remain unfilled, mental health support services have been slashed, and regional courts are struggling to operate.
“In Mildura, the bin is so poorly placed it’s actually hidden behind a pillar, and we’re told some bins were even allegedly constructed through the prison system, outside of Victoria. The government needs to answer the question: where has this $13 million gone? We want itemised costings and invoices.
“This is taxpayers’ money, and Victorians deserve to know why the bill is so high.”
Ms Benham said this wasteful program is a perfect example of misplaced priorities.
“This is exactly what happens when governments lose touch with the real issues facing Victorians. Regional communities do not have a machete problem. They have a law-and-order problem caused by insufficient police, under-resourced courts, and a government that fails to back our frontline officers.
“Instead of gimmicks, Victorians need proper investment in policing and community safety. The Liberals and Nationals will back our police, fill frontline vacancies, restore services, and make sure dangerous offenders face justice.
“Labor can’t manage money, can’t manage crime and Victorians are paying the price.”
