Manangatang P-12 receives $20,000 Grant
Manangatang P-12 College has received $20,000 in funding from VicHealth’s Growing Healthy Communities grant program to assist in their creation of “The Harvest Hub.”
Focused on preventing chronic disease and promoting good health, the VicHealth grant aims to create better, fairer health outcomes for young Victorians by fostering active, inclusive neighbourhoods, strengthening local food systems, and improving cultural safety in communities.
The Harvest Hub will feature a pop-up café with a potentially a mobile coffee and smoothie cart. The students will complete barista and food hygiene training and will also be involved in marketing, recipe planning and event management.
The grant will also enable the college to purchase photography equipment to enable the students to photograph and record recipes to create a cookbook and/or video recipe journal, inviting recipe submissions from local community members who may have a recipe that was passed down to them or members of Manangatang’s multicultural community.
The project, commencing in March 2025, will provide approximately 20 students with an opportunity to develop important transferable skills whilst also engaging more in their local community. It aims to increase community connections whilst also learning about food and food production.
Beyond the grant funding, VicHealth will support grant recipients by connecting them with like-minded leaders and ensuring everyone has the tools, training, and support they need to maximise health impacts for and with Victorian communities.
College staff member, Natalie Plant said, “We are very excited to receive the grant.”
“Manangatang is an hour travel to a supermarket and healthy food options are not always available. The aim is to create something sustainable so the program will continue after the grant has concluded.“
