Nationals Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, brought attention to the urgent need for traffic lights at the intersection of Deakin Avenue and Sixteenth Street in Mildura.
Jade Benham emphasised the severity of the situation, citing two fatalities and numerous serious injuries that have occurred at the intersection since 2009 in a meeting with the Minister.
The situation has become increasingly perilous, especially with the surge in traffic due to the growth of Mildura South and the bustling Mildura sporting precinct.
Mildura Rural City Council has identified the need for traffic lights at this intersection as part of its master plan for the fast-growing area. Requests have been made to the government previously, but the community’s patience is wearing thin, given the alarming frequency of incidents.
“The Mildura Sporting Precinct, with its numerous events and activities, significantly contributes to the congestion and dangers at the intersection.”
“I have emphasized the critical role traffic lights would play in ensuring regulated vehicular movement, thereby reducing the risk of accidents and further fatalities.
A petition, currently with over 1100 signatures, echoes the community’s concerns about the alarming rate of incidents, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the grim reality faced by those living in proximity to the intersection.
The Minister will refer this matter to the Department of Transport and will work collaboratively to implement the necessary measures to enhance public safety.
